Fox Sports Midwest to change name to Bally Sports Midwest!

For those on our Callabyte TV product, please be aware that FOX Sports Midwest (Channel 302) and Midwest Plus (Channel 303-304) will be changing its name to Bally Sports Midwest and Bally Sports Midwest Plus beginning March 31. Regional sports coverage will not change because of this rebranding. The sport teams you follow and love to watch will continue under the new channel names.

Frequently asked questions about Bally Sports Midwest

Q: Why is the network name changing?

A. Sinclair Broadcast Group officially acquired the FOX Sports Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) in 2019. Sinclair was required to re-brand the networks as a condition of the acquisition deal. As part of the evolution of the acquired Regional Sports Networks like the Bally Sports Midwest Channel, Sinclair has partnered with the Bally's Corporation to re-brand the channel and enhance the sports viewing experience.

Q: Will the channel numbers for the Bally Sports Midwest and Bally Sports Midwest Plus networks change?

A. No. On Callabyte's television service, Bally Sports Midwest will still be channel 302, and Bally Sports Midwest plus will be channels 303 and 304.

Q: Are there any changes to the teams carried on each network?

A. No. Viewers will be able to watch the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, Kansas City Royals and other local favorites on the new Bally Sports branded regional sports networks, just as they had before.

Q: Are there any programming changes or additions coming?

A. There have already been programming additions to the regional sports networks since the Sinclair acquisition became final last year and more original and live event offerings are on the horizon.

Q: I don't like this new Bally branding. Who can I speak to?

A. We recommend you contact Sinclair directly at https://sbgi.net/.

Distance Learning Upgrade - Going on Now

We realize this school year will be different than most and we want to do what we can to help. Effective immediately, any time a school in our service area moves to distance learning for their students, we will increase the basic residential internet package from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps. This will help the increased demand for high speed, reliable internet service from students learning from home. Callabyte TV Subscribers with DVR service - we recently asked you to be prepared for an upgrade to improve the future functionality and flexibility of Callabyte's television service by October 16. As you know, this upgrade will result in the complete loss of your DVR recordings and recording schedules. At this time, the upgrade is scheduled for the week of October 26. More details about knowing when your upgrade is complete and you are in the clear to restart recording are listed below:


Once the upgrade is complete on your DVR set top box, there are a couple of things you will notice to help you know you are in the clear to safely use your DVR again:

FIRST, as the system loads, there will be a new logo that appears similar to this:

Also, the guide will be somewhat different, with a listing of all channel abbreviations at left versus the logos appearing as before - plus the new logo at the top when it first comes up:


One other detail is when you press menu on the remote, 'Applications' appears in the listing. This doesn't have a function at this time, but it's new and a sign your upgrade is done:

What is Lifeline?

Lifeline is a program to help make communication services more affordable for low-income households. Lifeline provides subscribers a discount on monthly telephone service purchased from participating providers. Subscribers can also purchase discounted broadband from participating providers. The discounts will help ensure that low-income households can afford 21st-century broadband and the access it provides to jobs, education and other opportunities.

Lifeline Discount

The Lifeline program is administered in a partnership arrangement between the Federal Communications Commission and the Missouri PSC. The program is funded by the federal universal service fund and the Missouri universal service fund. The Lifeline discount may be as much as $15.75 per month depending on the service to which the discount is applied.

 Lifeline Eligibility Requirements

Streamlined eligibility requirements for the Lifeline Program include an applicant’s participation in at lease one of the following programs.

·         Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP)

·         MO HealthNet (Medicaid)

·         Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

·         Federal Public Housing Assistance

·         Veteran's Pension or Survivor's Pension benefit

·         Or income-based eligibility (At or below 135% of Federal Poverty Guidelines)

Participants in the Lifeline Program may receive one discount and that discount may be applied to only one service.  A service may include mobile voice (cell phone), mobile data (cell phone data or cellular hotspot), fixed voice (home telephone), or fixed broadband (home Internet - fiber, DSL, cable).  Participation is subject to annual recertification.

For those who have not heard, we want to follow up with you regarding the recent TV outage. We certainly realize it was test of patience and a lot of frustration for many of you. Please know that we appreciated your continued support as the technical difficulties were addressed. We were in close contact with our service provider, Co-Mo Connect, throughout the TV outage and know they had every available resource working around the clock to correct the issue. In the end, emergency maintenance was performed to update networking equipment to a more stable, reliable system.

Installation - what to expect

The time has arrived! Your Callabyte installation has been scheduled. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1)    Our Callabyte technician will install one of our cutting edge Gigacenter Optical Network Terminals (ONT) in your home. First, they will visit with you about where to place it – keep in mind the best wireless experience occurs within 35-40 feet of the ONT. To maximize your wireless experience, choose a central location for placement of the ONT, away from metal obstructions such as ductwork.

2)    We may need access to your attic or crawlspace, along with the area near the fiber panel on the outside of your home.

3)    Installation will include hooking up 1 Internet service, up to 2 TVs and 1 phone for no extra charge. Fees apply for additional installs and/or services.

4)    Before leaving, all connections will be tested and we will do our best to answer any questions and address any concerns.

NOTICE to Callabyte Phone Subscribers:

In an effort to ensure superior quality telephone service for each of our subscribers, Callabyte will soon be utilizing a new telephone partner to support the telephone service offered to our subscribers. If you are a current subscriber to the Callabyte phone service, you may have received or will soon be receiving notification from Big River Telephone (BRT) that our contract is ending. After careful consideration, we feel confident that our new phone partner, Alianza, is the best choice for our subscribers moving forward. With Alianza, Callabyte will be equipped to offer you improved functionality, added features, and additional subscriber control via an enhanced, web-based, end-user portal. This migration is in line with our constant commitment to offer our subscribers the best possible service by leveraging the most advanced technology available.

As we transition, all of our existing telephone lines from our current phone partner’s service will be migrated to Alianza. We are working diligently to minimize the impact on you as a telephone subscriber. However, there are a few items that may minimally affect you. As lines are migrated, there are certain feature settings that will be set to the system defaults of our new partner. Please see the following information for more details:

Telephone Partner Migration – Things to know

VOICEMAIL-NEW SYSTEM: Immediately upon migration, voicemail service will be turned ON for each line. If you have your own physical answering machine, you will likely want this feature disabled so that the two message-taking options do not interfere with each other.

VOICEMAIL-EXISTING SYSTEM: If you are currently using the in-line voicemail service included with your phone service, any saved or unheard messages will be lost at the time of migration. Please make certain to listen to your voicemails prior to your migration date. If you have any voicemails that you would like to keep a digital copy of, please contact our Callabyte customer service team for help at 573-826-2371.

VOICEMAIL-POST MIGRATION: Once your line is switched to the new provider, you will need to set up your new in-line voicemail service, should you choose to use it. To access your voicemail for the first time and personalize your new mailbox, you will need to dial *333 on your phone and – when prompted – enter your default PIN of 1234. The first time you access your voicemail, you will be required to reset your PIN to a new number other than the default we have provided for your first access.

CALL FORWARDING-POST MIGRATION: If you are currently using the call forwarding feature to forward calls to an alternate phone number, this will be automatically disabled at the time of migration; however, you can set it up again after migration.

END-USER PORTAL-POST MIGRATION: To register for the new end-user portal, visit https://callabyte.user.alianza.com/login. To give you immediate access, we have configured your user credentials using the following defaults:

                USERNAME: Your ten-digit phone number with no dashes or spaces, example 5556667777.

Password: The letter ‘c’, lower case, followed by your eight-digit Callabyte account number,    example c12345678.  The first time you login to the new portal you will be prompted to change your password to something other than the default we selected for you above.

ADDED FEATURES: Once you are switched to Alianza, additional phone features will be available at no additional charge. These include Caller ID name recognition and remote access to call forwarding. Unlimited local and long distance will include the entire United States and Canada. Subscribers will also receive 100 free minutes each month for each of the following countries:  Dominican Republic, Bahamas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rica and Guam.  Mexico and International calling plans are available to residential subscribers for an additional cost.  Calls to cellular phones are not included in Mexico or International calling plans so they will incur a per minute charge.

With Callabyte's video packages, brought to you by Co-Mo Connect, you have the option to stream your favorite programming with watchTVEverywhere. This is a FREE service available to our TV subscribers. It includes live TV as well as full episodes of current TV shows within days of their premiere. You can also catch up on the entire season or previous seasons of your favorite shows. This service is available anywhere you receive an Internet signal and can be viewed on a PC, laptop, iPad, iPhone or Android device. Programs vary by network and data roaming charges may apply.

To sign up for this service, see your TV Set Up Guide that was provided to you at the time of your service installation. If you don't have the guide, feel free to contact our office for your registration account number. You will also need the correct spelling of the last name on your account. Once you have this information, visit www.watchTVEverywhere.com. Select Co-Mo Connect from the provider drop down menu and click on "Register". You will be asked to provide an email address, password and password reset question. Once you have completed the registration screen, click on Register to create your account. The path to bringing fiber - a behind the scenes look

Fiber Installation

More than 80 years ago, local residents came together to create what we know as Callaway Electric Cooperative. Callaway’s distribution system was not built overnight. It was built during the course of many years with hard work and dedication.

The Callabyte fiber project is not all that much different. We are using our existing electric facilities to bring you high speed internet, phone service and television. While we may be using our existing assets, there is plenty of work to be done.

As Callabyte continues work in zone four and seven of the project, we would like to take you behind the scenes to see the work that goes with bringing you this life-changing technology.

Walk Out/Make Ready - Walk out is just as it sounds. Crews walk out lines checking to see if the existing facilities are able to handle fiber. Sometimes this process takes place over rugged terrain and in hard-to-reach areas. During the walk outs, pole issues are noted. In some cases, clearance could be an issue. Repairs have to be made before fiber is attached to the poles, which is where make ready comes in. Electric crews go back to prepare poles for fiber cable.

Design/Approval  - While crews are performing walk outs and make ready is being done, engineering design is created back at the office. At this point, we aim to efficiently design a system that will serve the area we are working in. During this stage, material needs are identified and the job is sent to the project supervisor for approval. This may seem like a quick process, but sometimes it can hit a snag.

“Highway clearance, digging issues and permitting are all things to take into consideration,” said Brent Long, Callaway Electric’s Manager of Operations.

Main Line Build/Fiber Drop/In-Home Install - Crews have been hard at work up to this point. The design is in place and approval has been made. Now, the main line is built to the service area. During main line construction, a steel strand is attached to the pole. Once the strand is in place, crews go back to lash the fiber. While this is taking place, electronics are being installed at the hut or location of fiber infrastructure, strategically placed throughout the fiber service area.

After the main line is constructed and all mainline splicing is completed, fiber drops are made. This is where a drop crew takes over. Drops take the fiber from the main line to the home. After the drop is made, the crew will install a box on the outside of your home. Just because you see a box on the side of your home, does not mean you are ready for service.

Splicing still needs to take place and a light reading needs to be performed. The light reading is a way to detect if the fiber design has worked.

What if we receive a bad light reading? It could be a hiccup in the design or perhaps the fiber is just kinked. Those issues have to be worked out before service can be installed.

After the light reading is conducted, someone from our customer service team will contact you to set up an in-home installation.

While this may all seem very easy, it is not. Designing such a system takes many hours of preparation and hard work.

“There are a lot of variables that could change that time line,” said Clint Smith, Manager of Administration for Callaway Electric. “Weather, supplies, contractor availability. This is an incredibly complex project with lots of moving parts. Luckily, we have very smart, hard working employees who work as efficiently as possible.”

I missed the signup, what should I do? - It is important to make sure you respond before your area’s deadline. Missing a deadline could result in a lengthy line extension that may require a per foot charge. Missing the signup means we would have to send a crew back to your location to build service. Callabyte is nearing the 2-year anniversary of breaking ground on our pilot fiber project of Stonehaven Subdivision, located just north of the Callaway Electric Cooperative office in Fulton. A lot has happened in those two short years and we would like to invite you in for a celebration.

On July 18 from 1-6 p.m. we are planning an open house of Callabyte at the Callaway Electric Cooperative office in Fulton. On this day we invite the Callaway Electric membership and surrounding community folks to come in and learn more about what Callabyte is and what we have to offer. At the event we'll have prize drawings, a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with the Callaway Chamber Ambassadors and an opportunity to get questions answered about service as well as opportunities to try our gigabit internet and video service on site. One of the biggest draws of the day will be a one day only special on the installation fee. If folks in the early phases did not sign up during our initial offer period, they can call or come in on July 18 for a reduced installation fee of $100.

In just two short years, Callabyte Technology has grown from providing service to homes in the Stonehaven Subdivision to now having over 1,100 homes and businesses committed to service and more than half of those lit up and currently receiving fiber to the home internet service. Several customers are also enjoying crystal clear Voice over Internet Protocol Phone Service along with High Definition Video. The VoIP and Video packages are offered by Callabyte, but not required. Great article in the June 16, 2017 Wall Street Journal regarding Internet Access in Rural America

The June 16, 2017 issue of The Wall Street Journal included an article addressing the lack of high speed internet in rural communities. According to the article, 'Fast service, according to the FCC, means a minimum download speed of 25 megabits per second, a measure of bandwidth known as Mbps. That speed can support email, web surfing, video streaming and graphics for more than one device at once. It is faster than old dial-up connections—typically, less than 1 Mbps—but slower than the 100 Mbps service common in cities.' Many of us in rural Callaway and southern Montgomery County know exactly what this means - 25 Mbps is nowhere near what is available in most of our rural area. However, Callabyte is changing the way we see and use the internet, right here in our corner of rural America.

What is fiber-to-the-home?

Callaway Electric has been working to bring fiber-to-the-home to the Cooperative membership through Callabyte Technology, L.L.C. Owned by the Cooperative's service company, Callabyte is a for profit, tax paying limited liability company that offers communications services to un- and underserved areas of the surrounding communities. Callaway Electric is constructing a fiber-to-the-home broadband network to improve the electrical distribution system's operation and efficiency. Along the way, Callabyte is offering advanced communications to reach a need for improved access to rural residents.

So what exactly is fiber to the home technology? Fiber to the home (FTTH) is the delivery of a communications signal over optical fiber all the way to a home or business, replacing existing copper infrastructure such as telephone wires or coaxial cable.

Fiber to the home is a relatively new and fast growing method of providing vastly higher bandwith to consumers and businesses, thereby enabling more robust video, internet and voice services.
Optical fiber is a hair-thin strand of glass, specially designed to trap and transmit light pulses. The fiber uses light instead of electricity to carry a signal. It is unique because it can carry high bandwith signals over long distances without signal degradation, and it can provide those signals simultaneously in both directions – upload and download. Copper media can also carry high bandwith but only for a few hundred yards – after which the signal begins to degrade and bandwith narrows.

Optical fiber has been used in communications networks for more than 35 years, mostly to carry core telecom traffic from city to city or country to country.
Connecting homes directly to fiber optic cable enables enormous improvements in the bandwith that can be provided to consumers, both now and for many more decades of accelerating bandwith demand. While cable modems generally provide transmission speeds of anywhere between 5 and 50 megabits per second on the download (and are generally much slower when uploading), current fiber optic technology can provide two-way transmission speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, with 10 gig systems now coming to market and even higher bandwith fiber networks now being developed. Further, while cable and DSL providers are struggling to squeeze small increments of higher bandwith out of their technologies, ongoing improvements in fiber optic equipment are constantly increasing available bandwith without having to change the fiber. That's why fiber networks are said to be "future proof".

During the next three years, provided our benchmarks are met, every Callaway Electric member will be added to the totals of those who have this transformative technology available to them.

New option lets subscribers choose path for fiber in 2018

There is a new way to connect with Callabyte Technology. If you are interested in receiving fiber service to your home or business, you will want to check it out. In early March, we launched a new website for Callabyte. The address is the same, callabyte.com, but the look, feel and capabilities are much different.

Through the new website, not only can you view a map of our currently planned service area, you can help determine where we will build fiber in the future. At this time, our construction schedule is planned for 2017. We have a plan for the order of walking out lines and identifying poles to be changed. We know where contractors will go for make ready work to prepare lines, followed by the crews to hang the fiber. These things have to be determined in advance. However, there is some time before we have to put the 2018 schedule in place and that is where you – our members/potential subscribers come into play.

The biggest question we hear from members about Callabyte is, ‘When are you coming to me?’ Our new website gives you the chance to help determine that. On the map page, the proposed areas are broken down into zones. You will see some of the zones require a sign up goal before we build service to the area. If there is an area with strong support to bring Callabyte services, we will look at building there before the less supported areas. We are giving you some incentive to get out there, talk to your neighbors and let us know the areas that want high-speed fiber to the home service the most.

Let us know you are interested through callabyte.com. Start by entering your address and from there the site will walk you through the high-speed internet services currently available in your area. You will be asked to fill out a feedback questionnaire, and you will have the opportunity to do a speed test of your current internet service. You can then build a model of products you are interested in and get an idea of the cost. Submit your information using the online form and our customer service folks will follow up to get you signed up if applicable.

The website tracks interest throughout our service area. This will help us plan the route to bring fiber throughout Callaway and southern Montgomery Counties. We are excited to launch our new website via the great folks at Crowd Fiber who are helping us continue the excitement about Callabyte. Through this site you are able to put in your address, see where you fall in our project 'zones' and let us know you're interested in service. As it says, or if you haven't already tried it, 'Put in your address to start'. From there you will be taken to information about whether we are building in your area or plan to in the future. You will also see and can verify information about services currently available in your area, you can do a speed test to check the speed you currently receive, and fill out a questionnaire of what brings you to Callabyte. You can then build a sample package to see what your monthly cost would be and submit your info to us so we can follow up and get you signed up for service if applicable.

Callabyte to bring fiber throughout Callaway Electric service area

If you are visiting this website you are likely familiar Callabyte Technology, LLC. This new company is bringing high speed internet through fiber to the home (FTTH) technology to homes and businesses in and around the service area of Callaway Electric Cooperative. The company is owned by Callaway Electric Service Company, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Callaway Electric Cooperative.

In the December 2016 newsletter of Callaway Electric, a map was published of the proposed 2017 projects for Callabyte. Future plans were also promised to be shared in the next few months. The information listed here presents those plans to you. The map you see pictured above includes what we have built and are currently working on plus the future direction of Callabyte. Area 1 illustrates our pilot and initial project area which began in the fall of 2015 and was recently completed.

The rest of the map, provided we continue to meet the benchmarks within our feasibility study, will be built as follows. Area 2 is underway for 2017. Callaway Electric members in this area are receiving information about sign up or will be receiving information as the year progresses. Area 3 is a goal for 2018 and depending on weather, sign ups, construction, etc. this area could move into 2019. The last area, labeled as 4 on the map, will follow area 3 in 2019, possibly stretching into 2020.

While the projected map is not a guarantee, we wanted to share our plans with you. The goal of Callabyte is to bring high speed broadband and enhance the quality of life right here in the rural heart of central Missouri. We feel strongly that this service will bring new opportunities for in home businesses, education and access to enhanced technology.

As mentioned earlier, the plan will move forward based on meeting benchmarks. The main driver of this is customer sign ups. So far, Callabyte has generated a lot of excitement and interest. Service area map for Callabyte Technology, LLC

Over a year ago, Callaway Electric began a new venture to bring high speed fiber internet to unserved and underserved areas of our service area and the surrounding communities. In doing so, Callabyte Technology, LLC was formed. The new company is bringing an opportunity to homes and businesses in the central Missouri area by offering broadband and other IP (Internet Protocol) services in the local community. The company is wholly owned by Callaway Electric Service Company, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Callaway Electric Cooperative.

Starting in the fall of 2015, Callabyte kicked off with a pilot 'fiber to the premise' project in the Stonehaven Subdivision off of Highway 54 in Fulton, MO. The pilot was a success and from there fiber has been built to the Southwind Subdivision on the south end of Fulton and continued down Route C towards Hams Prairie. Callabyte project areas are included in colored areas of the above map. The 2016 project areas include those marked 1A-G and 2A-B. As we finish up these areas, we are close to starting on phase 3 and have added phases 4-6 with a construction goal of 2017. Along with offering high speed broadband internet with packages starting at 100 Mbps up and down with unlimited data, Callabyte is offering video packages, as well as phone service through voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology.
